Selwyn District’s economy is continuing to expand, with new data showing strong growth across key sectors and clear signs of confidence from both households and businesses.

The latest Infometrics Quarterly Economic Monitor for the year to March 2026 reports that Selwyn’s GDP grew 1.5%, outpacing national growth of 0.4% with real estate, agriculture, professional services, wholesale and retail the key growth drivers.

Selwyn Mayor Lydia Gliddon says the results reflect a district that continues to thrive despite national and global economic pressures.

“Even with everything going on nationally, Selwyn’s still holding its own. You can see it in the everyday things: people moving here, busy shops, and new businesses opening. It tells us people back this district and feel confident about being here.”

Employment of Selwyn residents rose 4.2%, significantly outperforming the national decline of 0.8%. The report notes that “employment of Selwyn residents rose 4.2%, implying a net increase in residents commuting out of the district for work.

Consumer spending also surged, increasing 6.1% compared with a national decline of 0.3%. This reflects both population growth and strong household confidence in the district.

Record-breaking residential construction
Selwyn continues to lead the country in residential development, with new dwelling consents up 47.8% - more than four times the national rate.

The March 2026 quarter saw a record 636 new residential consents, surpassing the previous peak in 2021. As the report states, “Standalone houses made up 81% of Selwyn’s peak this quarter, with more standalone houses consented in Selwyn than in Christchurch City.

House sales were also strong, rising 18.6%, while new listings increased 9.4%, indicating a healthy and active housing market.

Tourism and business growth remain strong
Tourism expenditure in Selwyn climbed 18.7%, driven by a 43% increase in international visitor spending.

Business growth also remained robust, with the number of business units increasing 4.9%, double the national rate.

Low unemployment and strong social indicators

Selwyn continues to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country at 2.9%, compared with 5.3% nationally. The district also recorded:

  • The lowest NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) rate in the region at 5.8%
  • The lowest crime rate in Canterbury
  • The highest school attendance rate at 63.8%

Mayor Lydia Gliddon says the results reflect a strong, stable community environment and reinforce Selwyn’s position as one of New Zealand’s most dynamic and liveable districts.

“We’re seeing strong economic growth, but it’s not just about the numbers. It’s families choosing Selwyn, homes being built, and more locals out spending and supporting businesses. That’s what a healthy, thriving district looks like.”
