Investment in delivering cost-effective, good-quality infrastructure and public services over the past year has laid the groundwork for further savings to come.

The Selwyn District Council’s Annual Report for the 2024/25 financial year - adopted by the Council on Wednesday – showed over $125m of capital investment focused on roads, water and waste management – more than 80% of the Council’s capital expenditure.

The report shows a good start on how the Council can deliver further savings and focused spending for the future Mayor Lydia Gliddon says.

“We have heard from our community about what matters most; investing wisely in core infrastructure and the services that help keep Selwyn being a great place to live,” says Mayor Lydia Gliddon. “This report shows what has been delivered on by the previous council. We know there’s still work to do so our community feel and see the benefits of success and that will be at the front of our minds as we begin planning the Annual Plan for this coming year.”

Over the year, the Council provided 9.32 million m3 of drinking water, resurfaced 84km of roads, graded 11,777km of unsealed roads, fixed 5867 potholes and completed the conversion of streetlights on local roads to LED lights saving over $500,000 in power costs over the past two years.

The district’s largest single capital works initiative - the 25km Ellesmere wastewater pipeline - completed four months ahead of time and under budget, and the Lincoln Town Centre upgrade began.

The report also showed Selwyn retained a strong economy and sense of community. The popularity of community facilities continued to grow, with more than 1.7million visits to libraries, pools and community centres, while over 200,000 people attended Council supported community events.

Selwyn continued to be one of the strongest economies across Aotearoa New Zealand with GDP rising 1.4%, at the same time the national economy shrank by 0.8%. The number of businesses grew by 3.1%, while jobs increased by 3.4% and new housing consents by 15.5%.

“Selwyn is a great place to live, and we have a great community here. We are committed to focusing our work on the key items we need to deliver to keep this a great place to call home,” Mayor Gliddon says.

In line with the Local Government Act (2002), the Council will publish the Annual Report on its website within a month of adoption. This is to allow for any final changes to be made to the report. The Annual Report will be available online and at Council libraries and service centres by 30 December.
