The Selwyn District Council has accepted the resignation of Chief Executive Sharon Mason and announced the appointment of Steve Gibling to become Acting Chief Executive.

The Council has agreed that Mrs Mason’s final day of work will be 16 January 2026, with a payment made in lieu of her contractual notice period of 3 months.

At its meeting today, Council noted that Steve Gibling will become Acting Chief Executive from 5pm on 16 January 2026 and agreed to deputise the Mayor and deputy Mayor to enter into negotiations with Steve regarding the terms for the Interim Chief Executive position.

The Council also resolved to hold an extraordinary meeting on 21 January 2026 at 1pm to consider the recruitment process for the permanent Chief Executive appointment.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon acknowledged Sharon’s contribution to the district:

“Sharon has led this organisation through a period of significant change, strengthening internal processes and positioning Council for a successful future. Her leadership has been instrumental in delivering key projects and ensuring Selwyn continues to thrive. We thank her for her dedication and commitment to our community. Sharon has another exciting opportunity on the horizon, and we wish her every success in this next chapter.”

Mayor Gliddon also welcomed the appointment of Steve Gibling:

“Steve is a calm, practical leader with deep knowledge of Council operations and extensive experience in local government, having worked with councils across the country. Since joining Selwyn District Council, he has demonstrated his capability during multiple periods as Acting Chief Executive, providing continuity and stability as we work through the Annual Plan and other key priorities. His proven ability to maintain strong working relationships with councillors and staff reflects his dependability and integrity.”

The Council will begin the process of recruiting a permanent Chief Executive early in 2026, with further details to be considered at the extraordinary meeting and subsequent Council meetings.
