New speed limits for roads across Waikirikiri Selwyn are a step closer.

The Council agreed last week to send a list of proposed changes to the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) for approval, following the Safer Speeds for Selwyn consultation.

Selwyn is one of the fastest growing districts in New Zealand. Many roads that once carried mostly rural traffic now connect new homes and schools, Council Head of Operational Delivery Gareth Morgan says.

“We heard from people right across the district, and that feedback changed the final proposal. These changes are about matching speed limits to how each road is used today.”

Once NZTA certifies the proposal, Council will be able to implement the approved speed limit changes. Current speed limits will remain in place until this process is complete. Implementation is expected to occur from late 2026 or early 2027, with Council to confirm and publish implementation dates once they are finalised.
