NZ Police to target Selwyn motorists as part of Better Together safety campaign
New Zealand Police will be targeting Selwyn motorists in the next six weeks to encourage safe driving speeds as part of the Better Together road safety campaign.
The campaign is a joint initiative with New Zealand Police, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and Selwyn District Council to remind drivers that speeding puts everyone at risk.
"The speed limit is a maximum, not a target," says Selwyn District Council Executive Director Infrastructure and Property Tim Mason, who points out that speed influences the outcome of every crash.
"Even when it is not the cause, the speed people are travelling at can determine whether those involved are killed, seriously injured or able to walk away," says Mason.
Canterbury Road Policing Manager, Vicki Walker, says that everyone should expect Police to enforce anytime, anywhere on our roads.
"There’s no excuse for speeding. If you’re driving above the speed limit, expect the appropriate enforcement action to be undertaken. It’s not worth putting yourself and others at risk of death or serious injury."
During the rest of October and November, people will be reminded through advertising and education of the consequences of speeding, this will be supported by Police enforcement activities.
Mason emphasises that that it is up to each driver to make a decision to keep themselves and others safe on the road.
“When people choose to speed, they’re putting not only themselves, but their passengers and other people on the road at risk. Road deaths from excess speed have torn families apart. Together we can make everyone safer on the roads, but all of us need to make that commitment.”
