Selwyn still fastest growing district in the country

Updated population data released by Statistics New Zealand show that the Waikirikiri Selwyn District continues to be the fastest growing district in the country in the 12 months to 30 June, 2024.
In those 12 months, the population in Selwyn grew by 3.9 per cent which equates to 3,200 new arrivals in the district.
Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton says that these overall growth figures are not a surprise for anyone living in the district.
The detailed breakdown of the statistics shows that the biggest population jumps occurred in urban areas with Rolleston (9.6%), Lincoln (8.1%) and West Melton (4.9%), “We have done a lot of work in recent times to get solid data on these growing pains to show central Government why we need more investment in, health, education and policing to support our current and future population.”
“Our data shows that Selwyn residents contribute at least their fair share in tax. But over the last 10 years we have seen a significant disparity between the taxes raised locally against the level of central Government investment to the tune of $2.6 billion,” says Broughton.
“We are working closely and collaboratively with central Government agencies and their Ministers to better understand how to rectify this under investment.”
The new data is the first population estimate to be based off the 2023 Census data and provides an update to the previously released June 2024 population data.
