Have your say on public transport changes
Environment Canterbury is asking for Selwyn feedback on proposed changes to public transport services to the district.
As part of its Annual Plan consultation Environment Canterbury is consulting on three changes to public transport services.
For Selwyn residents in particular, these changes could impact your rates.
"We're really pleased to see the Selwyn questions in there," Environment Canterbury Chair Craig Pauling says.
"The Selwyn community has been asking us about these services for some time now, so it’s good to be able to respond and get the proposals out for consultation."
Environtment Canterbury is asking Selwyn residents for feedback on:
- Changes to Greater Christchurch bus zones to move to a 2-zone or 3-zone fare structure
- A proposal for a two year trial Darfield to Rolleston bus service via West Melton and Kirwee.
Environment Canterbury is proposing that this service would be funded by a targeted rate to ratepayers in Darfield, West Melton and Kirwee.
It is asking residents of these townships if you would support funding this service and your feedback on two possible options for either a bus service at peak times only, or with a midday service as well.
Since July 2023 Greater Christchurch buses have been running with a flat-fare structure – just the one zone across our whole Greater Christchurch network. The flat-fare structure started as a two-year trial and Environment Canterbury has now agreed to continue the trial until February 2026. It says a zone structure then needs to be introduced due to increased cost and central government expectations to increase private revenue. It is asking for feedback to decide how many zones it should move to. There is no impact on rates for either option because the zone fare structure only impacts people who use the bus.
- Proposed improvements to the Route 85 Rolleston-to-City direct bus service.
The proposal is for a 2-year trial of improvements for the direct services between Rolleston and Christchurch city. If the trial is approved Environment Canterbury will engage further with the local community to scope the potential improvements and prioritise them based on local feedback and the available funding.
Chair Pauling encourages people to read the draft annual plan, which lays out the $358 million dollar work programme the council plans to deliver in 2025/26, and the proposals for consents fees and charges.
