Future-Proofing Selwyn's Key Roads

Two of Rolleston’s busiest routes, Hoskyns Road and Jones Road are set for major upgrades early this year, to improve road safety, and support Selwyn’s transport access to Rolleston Izone Business Hub, IPort Business Park and Rolleston township.
The councils Capital Works and Transport teams have each identified separate works to be completed and are working together to deliver these upgrades in one construction programme, to reduce disruption to the community and ensure the most efficient use of resources.
Hoskyns Road Upgrade
Hoskyns Road will be widened, and safety improvements will be made to five intersections along the road.
The work will also include an upgrade to stormwater works and intersection street lighting.
Hoskyns Road is a major connector road in Selwyn that links to Jones Road, State Highway 1 and Rolleston Drive. It also connects to the Izone Business Hub, which is home to 70 businesses and IPort, a $500 million dollar Business Park and key industrial site for the South Island.
As a key freight route for Rolleston, widening the road will make it safer for heavy vehicles and commuters to access Rolleston’s industrial and residential areas.
In December early works started around the site to improve drainage, with the main works underway this year. The upgrades will run from 6 January to 13 May, with temporary road closures in place to complete the project more efficiently.
Jones Road Upgrade
Starting in mid-February, the Council will begin work to improve Jones Road between Hoskyns and Weedons Ross Road. The project will focus on strengthening and resurfacing the road. The road is also a main access route to the Rolleston industrial area, in particular IPort.
The upgrades will improve safety and support access to IPort, especially for heavy vehicles.
The traffic management for this work will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
Both projects are being completed ahead of New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi construction of a flyover over SH1, connecting Rolleston Drive North to Jones Road. During construction of the flyover, Jones Road will serve as a key detour route.
Selwyn District Council’s Executive Director Infrastructure and Property, Tim Mason, says this is about preparing for the future.
“Our teams and contractors are working together to maximise the upgrades we can get done, by minimising disruption and getting the best value for money for our rate payers. These upgrades will make it easier to get around and support our economy.”
