Safety Upgrades on Southfield Drive

Safety improvements are being carried out this week on Southfield Drive in Lincoln, in response to concerns from the surrounding community.

The Council has agreed to install a range of low-cost safety upgrades due to increased traffic on Southfield Drive, especially around Ararira Springs Primary School Te Puna o Ararira.

These improvements will be in place from Monday 17 August.

Following discussions with New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, the school's variable 30 km/h speed zone will be extended to Southfield Drive to support lower vehicle speeds during school arrival and departure times where they are most needed. Council will be extending the school's variable 30km/h speed limit onto Southfield Drive to support lower vehicle speeds during school arrival and departure times. The extended school speed zone has been approved by New Zealand Transport Agency to operate from 8.30am to 9.00am and 2.45pm to 3.15pm on school days, commencing Monday 17 August 2026.

Temporary speed humps will also be installed at the Liffey Springs crossing near Russ Drive and near the Edward Street intersection between Perthshire Crescent and Kidson Lane. We will regularly review the need for the speed humps. Temporary speed cushions will also be installed at the Liffey Springs pedestrian crossing near Russ Drive and on Southfield Drive near the Jacobsen Lane intersection. The effectiveness of these measures will be monitored and reviewed on a regular basis.

Additional road markings will also be added to help create a safer environment for all road users and the surrounding community.
