New recyclable dog tags available from 13 July
Selwyn District Council is updating dog tags across the district and moving to a recyclable plastic strip tag from
13 July.
Over the past five years, the Council has trialled metal tags; however, feedback from the community has
highlighted that the tags aren’t as user-friendly as they need to be. One of the key issues has been durability, with
the writing on the metal tags wearing off over time and the tags breaking, making them no longer fit for purpose.
What’s changing?
- More durable
- New and updated design
- Recyclable
What this means for dog owners
- All new dog registrations will receive the new plastic strip tag
- Existing metal tags will remain valid; there’s no need to replace them immediately
- If you wish to purchase a new plastic strip tag to swap out your current undamaged tag, or replace a lost tag, the fee is $5.14 per dog tag
- If your tag is worn or damaged, a replacement tag will be provided free of charge, providing proof of damage
