Piling starts on new bridge over State Highway 1 in Rolleston
New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) has started piling to build the foundations for a new bridge between Rolleston Drive North and Jones Road.
The bridge is part of the Rolleston Access Improvements Project.
If you live or work nearby, you may hear noise and vibration at times between 7.30am and 6pm. The noisiest work will happen in short periods. NZTA has a plan to manage noise and vibration and will monitor levels throughout the work.
About the bridge
The bridge will cross State Highway 1 and the railway line, giving a more direct route between Rolleston township and the industrial area. The bridge will include a shared path for walking and cycling. A new southbound exit lane from State Highway 1 and a service lane will keep access to
Rolleston Drive and nearby businesses.
How piling works
Crews are installing 12 foundation piles, each around 20 metres deep and 1.5 metres wide. The steel casings are driven into the ground in sections before the soil and gravel are removed, a reinforcing steel cage is then installed, and concrete is poured to form the permanent piles. Each pile takes around five days to install.
Piling will move along the bridge in this order:
- north end, near Jones Road: October to November 2026
- north middle support: November to December 2026
- south end: January to February 2027
- south middle support: February to March 2027
Dates may change depending on ground conditions.
