The Toka Hāpai Selwyn Health HubThe Council is supporting safety measures to protect children at Rolleston School and users of the Toka Hāpai Selwyn Health Hub.

Following discussions with Rolleston School and users of the Toka Hāpai Selwyn Health Hub, and an independent safety assessment, the Council has agreed to close the temporary Kiss ‘n Go school drop off and pick up point access through the Toka Hāpai Selwyn Health Hub car park.

The agreement was made to address concerns about safety for children using the car park. Given the risks to children’s safety the Council has agreed with the school to close the Kiss ‘n Go access through the health hub car park from Monday 4 September.

The Council is continuing to support the school in finding alternative options for parents to access the school, including school safety travel plans and supporting discussions with surrounding landowners, Council Executive Director Enabling Services Kelvin Mason says.

“Our first priority for the Council and Rolleston School is to keep children safe. It is also important to make sure mothers in labour and ambulances have safe access getting to the Oromairaki Community Maternity Unit at the health hub. We’ll keep supporting the school and people getting health care at the Toka Hāpai Selwyn Health Hub to make sure everyone is safe and longer-term solutions are available.”

The Council installed the Kiss ‘n Go in 2020 with an agreement that it would be temporary while the health hub was built and reviewed following construction. The temporary Kiss ‘n Go was to support the school while it found an alternative arrangement after the closure of a Council car park that it had allowed parents to use for school drop offs and pickups.

The Council also supported the school in an arrangement with Fire and Emergency New Zealand to use its property next to the school for school access.
