The people who selflessly give their time and energy to support others, create opportunities and deliver services are being celebrated throughout the district from 18–24 June as part of National Volunteer Week.

The week is designed to recognise volunteer efforts and thank them for their hard work. Volunteering Canterbury Selwyn Outreach Coordinator Lizzie Daly says 90 per cent of community organisations are run by volunteers who are dedicated to helping make a difference in the lives of others.
“National Volunteer Week honours the collective energies and mana of all volunteers in Aotearoa. They grow our people, open minds and hearts, and create joy.”

One of the many organisations making a difference locally is Selwyn Central Community Care. Volunteer Coordinator Yvonne Lamond says when it comes to volunteering, “there is no I in team.”
“All of our volunteers contribute in more ways than one, ranging from providing transport for older people to get to appointments including the hospital or their GP, taking them shopping or to other activities. We also do morning and afternoon tea visits and day trips around the district. This is a way for our clients to get out of their homes and find companionship with others,” says Yvonne.
“Volunteering is so rewarding and many of our volunteers have become friends with the people they assist.”

A Big Shout Out has been organised for the district’s volunteers on Thursday 22 June at Te Ara Ātea between 6.30–7.30pm. Anyone who volunteers, as well as their supporters, is invited to attend the appreciation evening. RSVP for the evening.
