Mayor Sam Broughton speaks on stage at citizenship ceremony

In the Council's recent citizenship ceremony, newcomers and long-term residents took a collective step towards officially becoming Kiwis.

The ceremony, held at Te Ara Ātea, was attended by family, friends and supporters as 39 individuals received their New Zealand citizenship. Hailing from 11 different countries, including Libya, Brazil, the Philippines, and more, Selwyn's newest Kiwis were welcomed by Te Taumutu Rūnanga chairperson Liz Brown who opened the event and introduced with a waiata.

Special guests included Major Lawrence Field from the Defence Force, Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall, Councillors Elizabeth Mundt and Phil Dean, and Dr Surinder Tandon, President of the Christchurch Multicultural Council.

Mayor Sam Broughton who led the event, encouraged the group to bring enriching elements like their traditions, language, culture, history, and faith to the wider community, all of which adds a rich layer to our district and nation.
