A pile of dead branches sits in the middle of a dry fieldFire and Emergency New Zealand has advised that the Selwyn district has moved into a restricted fire season as of Thursday 5 March.

This means that anyone wanting to light a fire outside in the Selwyn district will need to obtain a permit from Fire and Emergency. Gas or charcoal barbecues can still be used without a permit.

People can apply for fire permits by calling Fire and Emergency New Zealand on 0800 658 628 or at, where you can also find tips on keeping your property safe.
