New health, learning and recreation spaces for Selwyn residents are getting closer to opening, as construction continues on exciting new district facilities.

Four major projects in Rolleston are due to open to the public this year, bringing new services to Selwyn including a library, community space, extended swimming pool, indoor sports and health services.

Mayor Sam Broughton says it’s exciting to see the projects come to fruition after years of planning and hard work.

“We’ve been through a period of providing new buildings and bringing new services across

Selwyn in response to the growth that we have had in the district. It’s great to be stepping into the next chapter in that long standing plan offering new opportunities for everyone in Selwyn.”

The Selwyn Sports Centre at Foster Park will be the first project to open in May, with eight indoor courts, a walking track, areas for fitness classes, and a community sports hub. In addition to sports, the hard floor surface will be able to host community events such as markets or car shows.

The centre also features the country’s first digital playground – an interactive sports wall combining sports and video games.

The Selwyn Health Hub fitout will begin at the same time, with tenants including the Canterbury District Health Board and Pacific Radiology. The hub, next to St John ambulance in Rolleston and close to the Southern Motorway, will house a birthing unit, radiology, general practice and other community health services.

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre extension will see a new 10-lane pool open in the middle of the year, with upgraded main pool, public areas and changing rooms due to be completed by October.

The final windows will be installed in the coming weeks at Te Ara Ātea, which will house the district’s largest library. In addition to housing a much larger book collection, the building will include a museum experience, versatile performance and meeting space, comfortable seating and study areas, and a studio space and workshop.
