Help to attend the adventure of a lifetime is on offer for young people in Selwyn.

Mayors around the country can nominate young people aged 16–26 to attend Outward Bound courses, sponsored by the Mayoral Forum for Jobs.

The courses are a chance to take part in something that will make a life-long difference, Mayor Sam Broughton says.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to broaden your horizons, meet new people and try something that will challenge your body and mind. You will have the opportunity to take part in something that will look great on your CV and show employers you are willing to step outside your comfort zone.”

Scholarships worth $3600 are available for two courses. The Mind, Body and Soul course for people aged 16–18, and the Classic course for people aged 18–26.

The 21-day courses use action-packed adventure with bush expeditions, water challenges, sea voyages and height activities, along with times of reflection, to help people discover their inner strengths and values and practical ways to apply those skills to everyday life.

Nominees will be required to fundraise $749 towards the course fee and arrange travel to and from Outward Bound.

Applications can be made to the Council and the Mayor will nominate candidates to the forum and Outward Bound, who will award the scholarships. Special consideration will be given for candidates who have overcame hardship, or do good work in the community.
