The $4.6m (projected total) facility, located at Rhodes Park, is a community-driven initiative which replaces two earthquake damaged and outdated halls in the township.

The community centre is now accepting bookings from anyone who wishes to use the facility, however exterior work including landscaping will be completed over the next few months, as some of the work can’t be completed during winter.

An official opening ceremony is planned for mid-August, so that everyone who was involved in the planning and construction of the new community centre can be present.

Council Major Projects Manager, John Reid, says it’s exciting to see the new facility operational and hopes the community will start using it straight away.

“The new Tai Tapu Community Centre is a brilliant community asset and it’s ready for everyone to enjoy. This facility is a very good example of a community-driven project with the Selwyn District Council providing guidance and support.

“The Council is delighted with how various community groups in Tai Tapu have collaborated to create a multi-purpose and modern facility which serves the needs of the whole community,” Mr Reid says.

The new facility features three community rooms with a total capacity in excess of 500 people – each room has access to kitchen and bar facilities. It also has changing rooms, public toilets, and a large roofed outdoor courtyard.
