Residents who have gone past the Council’s Rolleston headquarters recently will have noticed work being undertaken on the construction of a new car park and public park-and-ride facility, on the site between the building and Kidman Street.

Both car parks are expected to be completed in May, depending on the weather.

Chief Executive David Ward says the work was set in the 2018-2028 LTP last year, as part of the extension and reconfiguration of the Council building.

“This is an exciting time for the Council and the district, as these works are a clear indication of how quickly Selwyn is developing,” Mr Ward says.

The new public park-and-ride car park will  provide 79 public car spaces and six cycle racks. This will allow people to park close to local bus stops in Kidman Street. It will also extend the parking capacity for Council staff with 59 additional car spaces and six motorcycle spaces. The additional car parks will provide extra parking for residents and visitors which will ease demand.

During construction, there will be some minor traffic disruptions along Norman Kirk Drive, however there will be temporary traffic management in place. There will be some minor delays and no street parking along some sections of Norman Kirk Drive.

Closer to this time, we will provide more public information about temporary traffic management via Council Call (in the Selwyn Times), the Council’s website and Facebook page.

The construction of the car parks may cause minor noise and vibrations. Because it’s hot and dry there may be some dust produced as a result of the works, however dust control measures are in place to limit this. There will be a time during construction when the northern parking area and fenced compound area will be closed off for Council staff and public use for about a week. This will allow Council contractors to efficiently complete the works.
