Students can now apply to get a head start with their fees, through the Council’s tertiary scholarship.

There are 12 scholarships up for grabs, including eight scholarships for year 12 and 13 students attending Darfield High School, Ellesmere College, Lincoln High School or Rolleston College. This year the Council has introduced four new scholarships to be awarded to students regardless of which school they attend, including home schoolers.

The scholarship is awarded to students who reside in Selwyn and are planning to undertake full-time education/training at a recognised university, polytechnic or training institution in New Zealand.

Students who have achieved outstanding success in academic, sport, cultural, art, social responsibility or other areas at school or in their community, and students who have overcome barriers or hardships, are encouraged to apply.

Receiving the scholarship last year, meant that student Caitlyn Stewart (photographed on the right) who is studying towards her Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Lincoln University could focus more on her studies and work less while still being able to pay her tuition. She said applying for the scholarship was super easy and encourages all students in Selwyn to give it a go and just be yourself.

Darfield High School student Emma Cunningham who also received the 2023 scholarship is currently studying a Bachelor of Nursing at Ara Institute of Canterbury and says the scholarship has made a huge difference in her life, both financially and in terms of motivation.

“It has been a game changer! It has alleviated much of the financial burden and allowed me to have all my focus on my studies rather than working extra to cover the costs of extra books, and equipment.”

Applications for the scholarships are open until 5pm, Wednesday 11 September 2024.
