Fire and Emergency New Zealand has advised that the Selwyn district will be moving to a total fire ban as the hot summery conditions push up the fire risk.

From midnight Friday 24 January Selwyn, Waimakariri, Hurunui and Christchurch will be in a Prohibited Fire Season. This means that no fires will be permitted during this time unless it is an approved fire type (for cooking purposes). All permits that were previously issued are suspended until the prohibited season is lifted.

People can find out which fires are permitted by calling Fire and Emergency New Zealand on 0800 658 628 or at www.checkitsalright.nz, where you can also find tips on keeping your property safe.

With dry conditions set to continue, residents and visitors are urged to make sure they stay fire safe this summer. Please take care when undertaking any activities which could cause sparks including using machinery and lawn mowing. Check out more information and fire safety tips from Fire and Emergency.
