Mayor Sam Broughton and a group of school children in high visibility yellow vests cross the road at the new traffic lightsWest Melton residents now have a safer way to get around the township with the new traffic signals at the intersection of Weedons Ross Rd and State Highway 73 turned on last month.

Following feedback from the community supported by the Council, the traffic signals were installed by Waka Kotahi to make it safer and easier to use the intersection whether people are walking, cycling or driving. It will also provide better connections to key facilities, like the community and recreation centre, the Domain, local shops, West Melton School, and early childcare facilities.

As well as traffic lights, the project also required Fulton Hogan to build a new cul-de-sac on West Melton Road, a link road and roundabout connecting Weedons Ross and West Melton Roads, make changes to stockwater races, and build safe shared paths, for walkers and cyclists.

Mayor Sam Broughton and Waka Kotahi Director of Regional of Relationships James Caygill joined the opening and West Melton School pupils performed a kapa haka to mark the occasion. West Melton Residents’ Association chairman Tim Schurr, who has been an advocate for the project said the improvements have “fixed our town.”

The project was funded through the Government’s New Zealand Upgrade Programme.
