Watch out for voting papers in your mailbox later this week – as voting gets under way in Selwyn’s local elections.

Voting papers will be mailed to all enrolled voters over the next few days, and the official voting period opens on Friday (16 September). Voting is by postal vote and closes at 12 midday on Saturday 8 October.

“This is a really important opportunity for Selwyn residents to have a say on the district’s future – and it only comes around
once every three years,” says Deputy Electoral Officer Stephen Hill. “We encourage people to take time to find out about the candidates in their area, then complete the voting forms and drop them into the post.”

Voting papers can be posted at any NZ Post postbox, and the Council is also providing ballot boxes at the Council
offices, all Selwyn libraries, and many community and recreation centres.

As well as Selwyn council elections, voting papers will also include candidates standing for your Environment Canterbury constituency. Voting papers include instructions on how to cast your vote.

If you don’t receive voting papers, it may be because you’re not enrolled, or have recently moved into the district or changed address – but you can still vote by special vote.

"I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t yet enrolled or updated their details to do so and cast a special vote.”

You can request special voting papers from the Council at electoral.officer@selwyn.govt.nz or 0800 SELWYN (0800 735 996), or call in to the Council offices or any Selwyn library during open hours.
