A crowd of children throwing teddy bears in the air

Thousands of residents have been enjoying Summer in Selwyn events around the district, with more than 40 events still to come.

The Teddy Bears’ Picnic – always a highlight of Summer in Selwyn – saw more than 1700 children and adults, and a host of teddy bears, attending the event last week in Rolleston.

Council Events and Funding Coordinator Cristene Trenuela-Chan says families and bears alike enjoyed a fun day out in the sun.

“It was a great community event with our MC George Read encouraging bears meeting new bears! There was a visit from Captain Hook, Belle and Fairy. Councillor McInnes was the judge for the Teddy Bears Parade giving awards for the Fluffiest, Most Loved, Biggest, Cutest, and Most Adventurous Teddies”

People have also been enjoying events including pool parties, the booked-out guided walks and the first outdoor movie of the season.

If you missed these, don’t worry, because the days are jam-packed full of fun for the whole family right up until the end of March.

From new events such as the Selwyn Garden series of speakers at our libraries, or the Selwyn Bike Trail Challenge, to annual favourites, like our outdoor movies and picnics – there’s something for everyone.

The final two pool parties of the series are on next week at Southbridge and the Pool of Rock party in the main pool at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in February, where local musicians will be performing.

Or, if you’re looking for a more relaxed activity we have added extra Picnic in the Park events in local townships with 10 picnics to come starting in Prebbleton on Thursday. The Prebbleton picnic will be held along with the first Skate Jam of the summer, with Skate Jams held every week on a Wednesday or Thursday around the district till the end of February.

The ever popular ‘A Month of Sundays’, our live music event series featuring local talent and fun garden games is back at the Lincoln Green next to Lincoln Library every Sunday afternoon in February.
