In celebration of Road Safety Week in May, Selwyn District Council and HEB Construction visited Springston School to educate students on truck safety.
HEB Construction brought two trucks and a digger, allowing students to experience what it's like to be a truck or digger driver.
Students learned about the significant blind spots around these large vehicles, what to do if a footpath is blocked, and how to safely get a digger driver's attention. They also enjoyed hearing the truck horns.
As part of the visit, HEB Construction introduced a new truck and invited the students to suggest names for it.
Dan Croton, Surfacing Project Manager for HEB Construction said, “We all had a fun day, teaching the tamariki to be seen and be safe, raising their awareness about where they can and can't be seen if they were on their bikes or scooters”.
This visit is part of a broader campaign by Selwyn District Council and HEB Construction, which has already included three schools, with more planned. The goal is to highlight the dangers of being near trucks and how to navigate work sites safely.
By engaging students directly, Selwyn District Council and HEB Construction aim to promote a culture of road safety and awareness.
