Hit folk singer Fraser Ross will be bringing a one night only gig at Te Ara Ātea, as the district fills with music for New Zealand Music Month.

Christchurch-based folk musician Ross — dubbed the ‘Kiwi Billy Connelly’ for his cheeky banter — has travelled the world and released several EPs and albums, including ‘And Birds Do Sing’, ‘Mongrels’ and ‘Life is Magic, Where is My Rabbit?’

He will be performing on Thursday 4 May as part of the events at Selwyn Libraries and at Te Ara Ātea in Rolleston for Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa — New Zealand Music Month.

The Music month events coming to Selwyn in May, will feature performances, lessons and fun activities planned for every member of the family, inviting people to try their hand at playing an instrument, listening to live music and attending special performances.

The theme for this year’s national Music Month is ‘community and collaboration’, which encourages people to think outside the box about what they can do together, support artists’ journeys as creators, and help build a connected and rewarding local music community.

The community connection is a huge part of music month, Council Culture, Content and Learning Manager Mat Logan says.
“New Zealand Music Month is a really fun month in our libraries and we’ve got a good range of events this year. It’s been really good to see the excitement people have for it with things like the taonga puoro event showcasing traditional Māori instruments already sold out and lots of excitement for other events.”

Among the events will be local performances every Saturday at all Selwyn libraries, music themed story times and guitar lessons, available every week at the Lincoln and Leeston Libraries for people aged 15 and over to get started or brush up on the basics.

The lessons will be run by Diego from Music with Diego, and you’ll need to bring your own instrument. Learn more about the musical activities and performances, including bookings.
