Rolleston recently welcomed its first township traffic lights, but six more sets of lights are to be installed over the next decade around Lincoln and Rolleston.

Alongside the two sets of lights already installed in Rolleston, another two are scheduled as part of the Long-Term Plan, while four sets are set to be installed in Lincoln.

The two recently installed lights in Rolleston are on Rolleston Drive/Masefield Drive, and at Hoskyns Road/Jones Road.

The two new projects, which are set to be completed over the next three years, will see traffic lights replacing the roundabouts at Tennyson/Springston Rolleston/Lowes Road and at Rolleston Drive/Tennyson Street.

Asset Manager Transportation, Andrew Mazey, says the new Rolleston Drive/Tennyson Street lights are designed to work in with the town centre development.

“We would like to coordinate this work in with the construction of the marquee town centre build of the new community centre and library. For Mazey and his team, this work is about future-proofing a continually growing town.

“With Rolleston we understand that the community is continuing to grow, and we will continue to monitor the town to ensure that traffic flow is kept steady, and that we best service the community.”

“Continuing on from the Christchurch Southern Motorway project we have been working alongside NZTA to bring improvements with developing and changing future access to the town.”

Like Rolleston, Lincoln has also been experiencing significant growth, and a beautification process of Gerald Street will run alongside the installation of new traffic lights in the village.

Four sets of traffic lights are set to be installed at intersections along Gerald Street. They will be at Gerald/West Belt, Gerald/Veron Drive, Gerald/Springs Road and Gerald/James and Edward Street.

Andrew Mazey says these will be hugely important to help preserve the village feel of Lincoln.

“With the transformation and beautification of Gerald Street, developing good traffic flow will help increase the user experience for those living and visiting Lincoln, as well as helping those on foot and cycling through the village.“

Mr Mazey says the travel habits of Lincoln University students is a factor in planning the new projects, and the Gerald Street/Springs Road traffic signals will help ensure the safety of those travelling to and from the University campus.
