Visitors to the Council headquarters in Rolleston will notice some changes over the coming months.

Construction work will begin on Monday 17 June to build a new customer services space and an office extension. The Council and the building will remain open for business as usual through this time.

The project, signalled in the Council’s 2018-2028 Long-Term Plan, will include a large new customer services area right at the front entrance. This will bring together the existing customer services teams, which were previously located in different areas in the building.

The building project reflects the growth of the district and the increase in Council staff numbers required to meet the changing needs of its residents, Business Relationship manager Stephen Hill says.

“The feedback we’ve had from people is that our customer services teams do a really great job, but putting them together in one area will make it simpler for people to find who they need.

“It also gives us a good opportunity to look at our systems and make sure we’re giving people the most timely, efficient and accurate service we can.”

All Council services will be operating as usual, but the main entrance doors will be out of action because of building work, so people will enter the building through the western staff entrance. Car parking will be available in this area.

“We hope customers will bear with us while we make these improvements. Many services such as rates, dog registration and consent applications can also be completed through the Council’s website,” Mr Hill says.

The new customer services area will be built in the space currently occupied by the Mayor, Chief Executive and their support staff, who will relocate to a new extension on the Rolleston Drive side of the building.

Seismic strengthening of the Council chamber is also being done, so it meets the requirements to operate as an Emergency Operations Centre.

The Council is aiming to have the new customer services space open by early November with the entire project planned to take about eight months. The public will be kept updated via the Council’s website and Facebook page.
