Liz, Elliot and Mayor SamI love serving as the Mayor of our incredible district, full of passionate, creative and flexible people and families who look out for one another.

Although Covid has forced us to cancel or downscale many memory-making opportunities, I’m proud of the individuals and businesses who continue to achieve great things in Waikirikiri Selwyn.

Next year will bring new challenges and opportunities so let’s be mindful of our own head-space and how our thoughts and actions are building or hindering ourselves and those around us.

As we come to the start of a new year perhaps we need to stop something that wears us down and start something that lifts our wellbeing. This year I stopped eating so much sugar and started eating more fish, I am trying to stop measuring my worth by what others tell me and have started yoga, I have stopped listening to the radio and started listening to more books.

I am feeling ready for Christmas and summer. I’m looking forward to cricket, afternoons at the river, an ice cream or two, food from the BBQ and sitting in the shade on a hot day and enjoying time with Liz and Elliott. This Christmas I hope you can take time to focus on the things you hold dear, coming together with family and friends, traveling somewhere new or revisiting your favourite spot and treating yourself.
