Latest update:  4pm 24 July

water over the road on Dalethorpe RoadThe forecast's looking mostly dry with a few light showers for the next few days, but please remember there's still a lot of water around.

ROAD UPDATES
Please keep checking our road closure map www.selwyn.govt.nz/roadclosures for road closures before travelling.

Our roading crews are out checking on roads and beginning repairs as the water goes down. But we can’t fix everything overnight, and while we’ll do what we can to make sure roads are safe, some repairs may take a little time.

If you’re driving, you can expect to still encounter some roading issues over the coming days, so please – slow down, stay alert and drive to the conditions. You can help us out by reporting any issues to the Council – phone, email or use the Snap Send Solve app. www.selwyn.govt.nz/contact-us

WATER UPDATES
Due to the rain stirring up the rivers a number of our river-fed water supplies are not able to draw more water while we wait for the water to go down and the rivers to clear. Our water teams are out working to try and get clean water into these supplies where they can, or alternative options for those in urgent need if we have to wait longer for the rivers to clear.
In the meantime please Conserve Water if you are on the Malvern Hills Dalethorpe, Acheron or Hororata Water Supplies.

water flooded under bridgeThere is still surface flooding across the district, so please drive safely and when travelling check our road closure map

If you are out on foot, look before you step for any flooding debris, such as broken bottles and nails that may be littered across pathways.

At this stage, our Civil Defence Centre at Lincoln Event Centre will not be reopening this morning, our teams will be working directly with those affected and we will be monitoring the situation throughout the day.

Please be careful when cleaning up as floodwaters can be contaminated. Talk to your insurer and take photos of everything if your house has been damaged. Clean inside first, then outside.

Selwyn Huts residents encouraged to evacuate as rivers rise

Due to heavy rainfall in the Selwyn river catchment, river levels are rising and are expected to continue to rise overnight.

This may cause out of river flooding in the lower Selwyn catchment and across Days Road.

As a result, the Lower and Upper Selwyn Huts residents are at risk of becoming isolated, due to the road becoming impassable.

After consultation with Environment Canterbury Flood Controllers, Duty Civil Defence Emergency Management Controller, Murray Washington is encouraging Lower and Upper Selwyn Huts residents to self-evacuate now if they are concerned and to stay with family or friends tonight.

Civil Defence staff are at the huts supporting residents.

If residents have nowhere else to go, a Civil Defence Centre is open at Lincoln Event Centre, Meijer Drive, Lincoln.

Residents can expect Days Road may be closed after the self-evacuation.

For further updates on the current flooding event, check the Selwyn District Council Facebook page www.facebook.com/SelwynDistrictCouncil or ring 0800 SELWYN (735 996). If you feel there is any threat to life, call 111.
