2020 will certainly be a year talked about for decades to come.

The challenges we faced since March have been considerable but the overriding impression that will stay with me is how our communities came together and supported each other through lockdown.

Our team at Council did everything within our power to keep you safe and your services running, however we were only one small part of the jigsaw. It was the volunteers, community groups, emergency services, essential workers and many others that worked tirelessly looking after the needs of our community that got us through.

As it starts to heat up and we head into the Christmas holiday period there’s plenty to look forward to in Selwyn and many different ways to keep cool. Our rivers and lakes provide great natural spaces to take a dip. Our township pools are up and running and the Selwyn Aquatic Centre has a full programme of activity and is only closed on Christmas, Boxing and New Year’s Day.

If you don’t fancy the water why not take a trip to one of our beautiful shady parks and reserves for a picnic or visit Selwyn.nz and explore the opportunities to keep the whole family busy over the summer holidays. Also keep an eye out for our ‘Summer in Selwyn’ brochure, which you can find online or in our library’s if one hasn’t already dropped through your letter box. It’s packed with fun activities and things to do for all ages.

Christmas is a great time to think about those in our community who might need a little extra support. It might be a working parent struggling to keep their children occupied during school holidays or a neighbour who might be alone this year as their family from overseas can’t visit. With Christmas being the celebration of Jesus’ birth we can all do our bit to love one another.

Liz, Elliott and I will be taking some time to get out and about and enjoy our amazing district and I hope you have the chance to do the same. We wish you, your family and friends a very safe and merry Christmas.

Sam, Liz and Elliott.
