The consultation asks for feedback on a proposal to reduce the number of councillors, adjust the ward boundaries and not have community boards. Councils must review their representation arrangements at least once every six years to ensure they are still fairly and effectively representing their community.
Fair representation looks at population size, and seeks to ensure each councillor is representing roughly the same number of people. Selwyn’s population has grown unevenly in recent years resulting in councillors representing more people than others.
The proposal would ensure each councillor represents about 10,155 people each. Currently only one of the four wards - Malvern - has a community board.
The proposal would see all wards have the same number of community boards. Effective representation considers the number of councillors in relation to the size and geography of a place, as well as the diversity of its people.
The four ward proposal considers the diverse interests of Selwyn’s communities.
